A Legacy That Lives On… From Father To Daughter
Prior to 1970, there was a lack of accessible healthcare facilities for farm and field workers in Imperial County. Recognizing this need, Mr. Fernando Sanga, an important community figure, made it his mission to establish a clinic that catered to the unique needs of these workers, providing flexible hours so they could seek affordable medical care without compromising their work schedules. He passionately believed that every individual deserved access to excellent health care, regardless of their circumstances. Rallying support from like-minded individuals and the community, he and the founding partners opened the first medical clinic in Brawley in 1970.
As a nurturing father to eight children and a husband to his wife who stood by his side every step of the way, Mr. Sanga understood the importance of family. In those days, going to the doctor or grocery shopping was a cherished family affair. Mr. Sanga envisioned health care as an extension of this family custom, where families could collectively seek medical attention while ensuring the hours accommodated the needs of both parents and children.
Mr. Sanga's commitment to the community went beyond the establishment of a clinic. He actively volunteered, and in 1982, he ran for the 80th Assembly District, extending his mission to help the community with the problems they faced every day.
His vision and dedication to providing accessible health care for farmworkers and their families set a precedence for future generations, and his daughter, Shirley Ann Chronister, is continuing his legacy.

Shirley Chronister is the current Chairperson of Innercare’s Board of Directors. She is the second eldest among eight siblings and boasts a career in the banking sector spanning over 40 years.
In a heartfelt conversation, Shirley shared her thoughts on the impact of a remarkable family legacy focused on community service and care. “If my father were here today, he would undoubtedly be filled with immense pride to see how much Clinicas/Innercare has grown, considering where they started over 50 years ago. It's truly remarkable to see how it has expanded from one small clinic to ten medical clinics and six dental facilities.

“When I was first asked to join Innercare's Board eight years ago, the time commitment and my existing job made me wonder if I could fully dedicate myself to this new responsibility. But once on the Board, it felt like a natural fit." Crediting her father's influence and his passion for volunteering and helping others, Shirley's mission is to continue the foundation that Innercare’s founding members brought to this community. “Every Board member's hard work and dedication play a crucial role in steering us in the right direction. We're all committed to the growth and success of Innercare, united in our journey to provide exceptional healthcare services to our community.
She added, “It's not just about providing health care; it's about delivering it at a level that leaves a lasting impression on individuals, encouraging them to return for future healthcare needs… and understanding the wide array of services available. We believe in welcoming people from diverse backgrounds and ensuring a pleasant experience when they enter our facility.
“If I could talk to my father, I'd share my profound love and respect for him, emphasizing my overwhelming pride in how he influenced me. His teachings about the significance of volunteering and the powerful example he set have left a lasting impact.”
